Keep an Eye on Bausch & Lomb

Renu with MoistureLocThe best known brand in the contact lens industry has a problem. Bausch & Lomb's Renu with MoistureLoc has been linked to a serious eye condition knows as Fusarium Keratitis. The company recalled the product from the market yesterday and issued a statement acknowledging that "some aspect of the MoistureLoc formula may be increasing the relative risk of Fusarium infection in unusual circumstances." This is a serious ailment that can lead to blindness. In the past it was a very rare condition, and one that vision care professionals rarely ever encountered. Then in 2006 outbreaks began to occur around the globe, and soon the theory of a link between MoistureLoc and the condition emerged. To their credit, Bausch & Lomb did pull the product, but they are now in a difficult spot. With an estimated 2.3 million MoistureLoc users in America alone, the company must proceed carefully. Notice the carefully worded statement issued by the CEO does not admit that the product causes the infection, just that it may contribute to it in rare circumstances. So how can the company effectively maintain the trust of the consumer marketplace while not bankrupting itself? What type of restitution should the company make to those impacted by this affliction? What will be the reaction of the marketplace, as competitors will surely try to exploit this misstep. As a marketing professional and as someone who has worn contacts for nearly 30 years, I will be following this story closely as it unfolds. For now, I will be throwing out my Renu with MoistureLoc and switching to something else. If you are a contact lens wearer, you may want to do the same. Voice your opinion with a comment.
