Enjoy the Ride

BicycleMy brother in law Geoff is a cycling enthusiast – a self described Crank Addict.  He is also a scientist with a disdain for senseless human consumption and laziness.  So, when I was listening to a story on NPR’s Morning Edition about Cargo Bikes, I could not resist blogging about it for Geoff and others.

I live close to an amazing grocery store, Dorothy Lane Market.  I frequently make the less than 1 mile drive there an hour or so before meal time to grab some bread, missing ingredients, fresh produce, and other last minute additions to dinner.  Out of convenience, I opt for driving – even on nice sunny days.  The idea of a cargo bike to head to the hardware store, grab some groceries, and ride back home is appealing to me.  This concept is great.  I think it could be very interesting for urban businesses that deliver goods in population dense areas.  I suppose I could probably get the same benefits as a cargo bike from my mountain bike and a back-pack.  Not only could something like this lower carbon emissions and fossil fuel consumption, by increasing exercise it could improve public health and lower health care expenditures.  Even better, riding a bike is fun.

As I ponder 2010, and changes I want to make in my life I think about simple things like this idea.  While it is not likely that I am going to spend money on a new “cargo bike,” I do think there is huge value in looking for opportunities to replace sedentary behaviors like driving with active ones like riding a bike to the grocery.  Nope, I am not ready to commit to “health nut” status, but maybe, just maybe, I can use modest increases in exercise to work off some of that delicious beer, cheese, and bread I bring home from DLM.  Besides that if a 26.2 mile run is going to be on my list of goals for 2010, I am going to need all the help I can get.

Geoff Has A Blog!

geoffMy brother-in-law Geoff is one of the smartest and funniest people I know.  The guy is a freaking nuclear engineer, a cycling enthusiast, a master of trivia, and one of the best story tellers I have ever met.

Good news.  Geoff just launched a blog titled It’s The Best I Could Do ,  where he will share his talents, humor, and insight with the rest of the world.

A Daytonian now living in Charleston, SC, Geoff says that the site will be about “[his] love affair with Cycling, Cooking, Disgusting American Corporations that I’ve fired, [his] latest Fascination, Favorite Quotes, or just General Rants…”

Check out Geoff’s site for yourself, and welcome him to the conversation.

2008 Tour d’Burg!

The 2008 Tour d’ Burg.  What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon – surrounded by family and friends, gathered in downtown Miamisburg, watching hundreds of great cyclists compete for the Ohio State Championship.  Even better we got to cheer for my brother in law Geoff, who was competing in the race – his last as a category 5 cyclist.

To our delight, Geoff finished 2nd in his race – one that saw a handful of cyclists sprint it out for the last 300 yards to the finish line.  Geoff made a late push down the final straight-away and overtook 2 others just as he crossed the line.  It was thrilling to watch.  My wife and I, and everyone else there were jumping up and down and cheering as Geoff rode past us triumphantly.  I think he had the loudest cheering section of anyone in the event. It was awesome to see him come across the finish line with such enthusiasm.  I know how much he loves cycling and how hard he has worked to get good at it.  It was a moment to remember.

This was our second Tour d’ Burg – and again it was a great day. The Miamisburg Police Department handed out free bike helmets for children, vendors handed out clickers, noise makers, and trinkets, and there was face painting, balloons, games, and food vendors galore.  The event was not overly crowded, but had enough people there to make it an exciting event.

I hope that Miamisburg will continue to put this event on, as it is quickly becoming one of my favorite summer happenings.  I also hope that Geoff will be riding in next year’s race.  Although the competition will be stronger, I know Geoff has what it takes to bring home a trophy or two for the day’s efforts.  And if he rides in a better category, that just means that our cheering section will have to step it up next year too – which of course will be fun.

Did you attend the Tour d’ Burg?  What did you think of the day?  Will you go again?

Here are some pictures of the event, courtesy of another great brother in law – Chad -  who served as the unofficial photographer for the day’s events.

Are You Aware? Take the Test

http://www.diamondnetok.com/PhotoClipart/Basketball.jpg

I always thought that I had a decent sense of awareness. That is, until I got this awareness test video from my brother in law, Geoff – an avid cyclist. If you have not seen this, please watch this short video clip where you are asked to count the number of passes made by the basketball team in white uniforms. See how well you do. Geoff, for your sake I hope the people in South Carolina are more aware than I was. Please make sure to wear your helmet. Thanks for sending me this great video.
If you choose to comment, please do not give away the answer.
