To Become

Take a moment and answer the following question: “What do you want to become?”

What did you answer?

Do you want to become smarter? Healthier? Happier? More financially stable? A better parent? A faster cyclist? A marathon runner? A more loyal friend? A more valuable employee? Whatever your answer, this is an important question to periodically ask of yourself, because the answers serve as the guide for all that you do. Time on this planet is limited, and guess what — you don’t even get to know just how limited it might be. So, it is vital to think long and hard about what you want to become and then examine your actions to figure out what to do about it.

As human beings we have an incredible power to become something more than we are at present. We have the creative capacity to envision a reality different from the present state of things. Like no other creatures, people have the ability to dream.  What often separates the dream from reality is simple choices. These choices determine our actions. To consciously evolve into something new requires sacrificing some of what we are in order to become something new.

You could leave life up to the universe — going where the world will take you, living completely without regard for the future.  You could intentionally do nothing and then blame the universe, or God, or an infinite number of other things for your failure to become. Or you can define a vision of what you hope to become and choose actions that move you in the right direction. Step by step, day by day, and choice by choice you have the power to evolve into something new.

If you want to be a doctor, you have work to become one. If you want to be a runner, you have to get your ass off the couch and run to become one. If you want to be successful in any endeavor in life, you have to go through a process of becoming. That process is tough. It requires a willingness to dream and a relentless drive to achieve.

Again, answer the question “What do you want to become?” Follow that by looking at your recent activity, your daily actions, and your upcoming plans. Are the things you are doing helping make your dreams become your life?

No one else can dictate the path you choose. Decide what it is you want to become and act to make it happen.
